- Abstract
After the end of the Cold War, there was an increase in the number of "forced" immigrants (refugees) in parallel with the increase in intrastate conflicts. As the number of people exposed to forced migration has reached 82.4 million by the end of 2020, the phenomenon of "migration" has become one of the most important international problems today. 68% of all refugees in the world are citizens of countries with prolonged conflict. Syrian refugees constitute the most significant proportion of all refugees in the world. Due to the war in Syria for ten years, more than 6.7 million people are refugees. More than % 80 Syrian refugees reside in neighbouring countries, and more than half of them (over 3.6 million) are hosted by Turkey. Two other border countries hosting Syrian refugees are Jordan and Lebanon. Syrian refugees attempt irregular migration to countries in Europe due to the long duration of the conflict in Syria and the low possibility of returning to Syria. The mass and illegal migration of Syrian refugees to European countries and other developed countries has led to reactions in these countries, increased xenophobia, and increased border controls by these countries. Due to the opposition and policies developed by the international community towards Syrian refugees, this study examines the policy towards Syrian refugees in Jordan, which hosts the highest number of Syrian refugees after Turkey and Lebanon and share the same ethnicity, religion and language with Syrian refugees. This study investigated whether there is any negative opinion and attitude towards Syrian refugees in Jordanian society since Jordan is a country that belongs to the same ethnic and religious origin and speaks the same language as Syrian refugees.
