- Abstract
Three decades after Karl Krumbacher had organised the first institute of Byzantine studies at the University of Munich, an international congress on Byzantine studies was convened to present the scientific results. Initially restricted to a small circle due to political reasons, the event gradually became open to all nations, while international collaborations and scientific exchanges played an increasingly important role alongside country-specific efforts in Byzantinological research. Hungarian researchers were actively involved in these processes, and in addition to their high-level scholarly work, they also sought to integrate Hungary into the global scientific discourse through their efforts in cultural diplomacy. Thanks to their strivings, Budapest was awarded the right to host the most prestigious international congress in the field of Byzantinology, but due to compelling external circumstances, the event could not take place. This paper traces the original projects and conceptual frameworks through contemporary documents.
