- Abstract
This study aimed to examine psychological flexibility and motivation for participating in sports, regarding different variables in athletes with physical disabilities, as well as analyzing the relationship between motivation and psychological flexibility in the same population. A total of 132 licensed athletes participated in the study. As data collection tools, a personal information form, the "Scale of Motivation for Participation in Sports in Persons with Disabilities" (with three dimensions of Internal, External, and Non-motivation) and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II were used. For analysing the data, Mann Whitney-U, Kruskal Wallis-H and Spearman's Correlation were conducted. The results of the study indicated there is no statistically significant difference between males and females in sports motivation dimensions; however, female participants had significantly better psychological flexibility (U = 1483, p = .025). Internal Motivation was significantly different between the two groups of college and high school students, in which college students obtained better scores (U = 1212, p = .02). For national or non-national athletes, significant differences were obtained from the dimensions of External motivation (U = 1494, p = .033), Non-motivation (U = 1392, p = .009), and psychological flexibility (U = 1508, p = .04), in which national athletes outdid the non-national ones. In correlation analysis, statistically significant relationships were found between psychological flexibility and dimensions of motivation. In this regard, the better psychological flexibility the participants had, the higher Internal motivation scores (rs = - .175, p < .047) and the lower Non-motivation scores they had (rs = .485, p < .001). In this study, it can be concluded that, in people with disabilities, individuals with high psychological flexibility have higher motivation for participating in sports. Therefore, by providing interventions and educations, we can improve these two factors, thereby increasing the likelihood of participation in sports and a better quality of life.
