- Abstract
The article discusses the understanding and appreciation of the creativity of traditional art through a discussion of traditional Indian art. The article highlights the frame of mind that the author explains is needed to respond to traditional art and includes a detailed discussion as to why characterizing Indian art as sacred or spiritual is not conducive and rather inadequate for its understanding and appreciation. Also discussed are the differences between craft and art and how this impacts the interpretation of traditional art. Also mentioned are the sacred origins of numerous Indian art forms such as drama and the connection between art and ritual.
