The article presents information related to the use of the drug azidothymidine (AZT) for the treatment of AIDS. It is noted that the drug has been permitted clinical use in a tad over two years in 1989 after its fast-tracked approval process by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1987. It is mentioned that point, by blocking the viral reverse transcription mechanism, crucial for its replication, AZT showed to be extremely potent against HIV.
