- Abstract
Summary: On the basis of Calvin, the attempt of a comparison is made with reference to views of the Sufi determined Islam, particularly to the Persian Islam scholar Abū-Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (died 1111). It is argued that, based on insights from Reformation theology, assumptions, distinctions and cognitions typical of Calvin are also to be found in Islam in terms of 'natural theology'. Assumptions such as the inexcusability of mankind in light of divine signs; Distinctions, such as that between God's knowledge and self-knowledge and between a natural knowledge of God, which includes visual and cognitive elements, and a knowledge of God that makes certain; Cognitions, such as that signs (Arabic āyāt), even in light of Islamic-theological conception, on the one hand have the potential to lead to the knowledge necessary for salvation, on the other hand, salvation cannot be made directly through a rational interpretation of the signs.
