- Abstract
The article discusses the use of direct-to-consumer (DTC) commercial laboratory and its impact on health care. Particular focus is given to the case of a patient who has an above average risk of developing type 2 diabetes and whose genetic profile has been dismissed by his physician. It highlights the problem that medical education is not always in sync with clinical practice. A survey found that nine out of 10 member-physicians of the American Medical Association do not feel prepared to implement genetic testing recommendations in their practice. It points out the DTC genetic profiling may affect patient empowerment and medical innovation.
