- Abstract
The article notes that the 1980 Olympic Games held in Moscow, Russia was not only the year of a wave of repression among dissidents in the Soviet Union but also the year of the establishment of the free trade union Solidarnosc in Poland. The trade union had been established after a strike led by trade union activist Lech Walesa was launched at the Lenin shipyard in the Northern Polish city of Gdansk. The author first visited Poland in the summer of 1981.
