- Abstract
In this study we evaluated some weed species in the Sarajevo area for host status of tobacco rattle virus (TRV). From the leaves of naturally infected weeds virus was isolated by grinding the leaves in 0.06 M phospate buffer (pH 7.6) and inoculating the extracts to Chenopodium quinoa Willd. The identification of the virus is based on reactions of 8 differential herbaceous plants and on positive results of serological tests performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Our results demonstrate that six weed species were natural hosts of tobacco rattle virus: burdock (Arctium lappa L.), black horehound (Balota nigra L.), high mallow (Malva sylvestris L.), soapwort (Saponaria officinalis L.,) white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara L.). Species Balota nigra L. are reported for the first time as being spontaneously infected with TRV in nature. Since TRV has been reported to be seed-borne, future studies shoud be directed to determine potential transmission of virus by seeds in these weed species.
