When Should Unproven Allegations of Sex Crimes Be Disclosed to the Public?
- Authors
Wacks, David
- Abstract
In this brief piece, author David Wacks addresses the thorny issues that may emerge when sexual abuse allegations are brought to the public's attention before the suspect has been formally charged or sufficient evidence has been gathered. He discusses the implications publicizing such allegations versus delaying their release to the public for both victims and named perpetrators. Following the adage that it is better to let 99 innocent people go than to falsely charge a single innocent person, the author cites case examples where public allegations that were later judged to be false resulted in devastating personal, legal, and/or criminal consequences.
