Su Shi and Li Dun who is the father of Li Zhi are enrolled as candidates in the highest imperial examination held in the palace under the emperor's supervision. Thanks to the friendship between Su Shi and his father, Li Zhi keeps company with Su Shi and becomes one of "Six adherents of Su Shi". Li Zhi is poverty-haunted in all his life, but Su Shi especially treats him as the son of his friend, and helps Li Zhi a lot in the aspects of life or official career or literature. Su Shi treats Li Zhi kindly. Li Zhi whose father is dead in childhood esteems Su Shi as his father, often going in and out of master's home gate. He was the most diligent disciple in all the adherents of Su Shi. Except that Li Zhi takes up with Su Shi, he also makes friends with Su Zhe and the sons of Su Shi.
