- Title
Mindfulness is more than a buzz word: Towards a sustainable model of health care.
- Authors
Mars, Michelle; Oliver, Meeghan
- Abstract
In this article the health benefits of mindfulness in the workplace, in education, and in the practice of natural medicine are discussed. With reference to recent literature, mindfulness is located as a self-development tool in the context of a rapidly changing and increasingly complex social environment. Mindfulness is a much used and little understood concept. The discussion begins with a definition placing mindfulness in a contemporary health context, leading into an examination of its workplace and educational applications and its potential benefits for the sustainability of the health care system. The discussion is informed by the authors' experience of working in a College of Natural Health where weaving together the philosophy and practice of mindfulness is part of our strategic plan.
