- Abstract
The article explores the context in which rap music was created and what it meant to those who pioneered it in the U.S. Aside from addressing the trans-national potential of rap music, this article offers insight into why rap music has been adopted by youth throughout the world as a means of self-expression. Also described are the political and social context of the birth of an Afro-Peruvian identity and the specific contemporary issues that pertain directly to the Afro-Peruvian community.
