- Abstract
This article presents a series of reflections on what a dead language is, and the current situation of privilege of classical languages in regard to threatened or declining languages. Given their situation as hypercentral and supercentral languages, in relation to peripheral languages, that become truly extinct when lost, that a dead languages has vitality reveals itself as an apparent paradox. Their condition of influential or culture languages maintains their position of privilege in humanities and sciences. Furthermore, this article describes some methods and materials for teaching dead languages, in particular Latin, at the University of Costa Rica.
