- Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to determine the perceptions of Turkish and Syrian secondary school students towards the concepts of environment, school, teacher and friend through metaphors. The study was carried out with the phenomenology research design, which is one of the qualitative research methods. Study participants were selected by criterion sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling types. A total of 23 volunteer immigrant and Turkish students studying at the sixth and seventh grade level formed the working group. The research data was obtained through the metaphor form, which includes the metaphor to which the determined concepts will be compared and the sentences in which the justification for the analogy will be written. The data obtained from the students were evaluated using content analysis. As a result of the study, it was revealed that a total of 90 different metaphors were produced by the students. Students generally associated the concept of environment with metaphors of social environment, the concept of school with metaphors of trust, the concept of teacher with metaphors of love and protection, and the concept of friend with metaphors of love and closeness. It was determined that all Turkish and Syrian immigrant students made positive associations by producing positive metaphors for the concepts of environment, school, teacher and friend. Suggestions for the study were presented within the framework of the results.
