- Abstract
The caregiver plays an essential role in the daily life of the elderly suffering from dementia, getting involved in practically every aspect of care and assuming progressively added responsibilities. Feeding the elderly person represents a major difficulty for caregivers and is an important predictor of morbidities and work overload of this group. The role may require exceptional skills on the part of caregivers to help seniors with dementia to consume adequate amounts of food, calories, and fluids. The present study aims to determine the effectiveness of nutrition education intervention aimed at family caregivers concerning the nutritional status of the elderly. The literature was reviewed to identify articles and other sources of information on educational intervention focused on family caregivers. There is no consensus regarding the benefits acquired with the education for caregivers of patients with dementia. However, the articles show widespread confirmation of the need for education programs aimed at caregivers, to improve their quality of life as well as that of their patients. This review of the scientific literature demonstrated the positive effects of nutritional education for caregivers regarding weight, nutritional status, mood, and on reducing cognitive decline in the elderly with dementia.
