- Abstract
Knowledge of the ratio of established seedlings/soil seed bank is useful for the prediction of weed infestations. Previous studies have shown that this ratio (in fact an emergence rate) is generally low, but variable between species, years and experimental locations. The present work tries to explain the variability of the emergence rate, for some broad-leaved weeds with rather persistant seed banks, in ploughed or minimum tillage winter and spring cereals. The emergence pattern and the composition of the seed bank were recorded from natural populations, for two successive years, on 26 cultivated plots of an experimental station in Grignon, near Paris. The results show a relative stability between plots and years for similar sowing conditions. Two factors may explain the residual variation: the depth of seed burial and probably the seed age. The seed size, the germination period and the mode of estimation of seed viability are mainly responsible for the interspecific variability of this ratio. The use of X-ray radiography compensated for the inadequacy of germination tests and partly reduced this variability. Specially low emergence rates have been observed in non-ploughed plots. A simple statistical model is proposed to account for the variability of this ratio for annual broadleaved weeds in winter crops.
