- Abstract
The article discusses a study on the language shift among Singaporean Malayalee families. According to the study, members of the said family who are below 50 years old are shifting from Malayam to English language. It cites the failure of Malayalees to learn more about their own culture and adds that language was not transmitted as the primary language to children. It also notes that the low status of Malayam in Singapore is one of the factors that affect language maintenance among Malayalees.
