- Title
Kissinger's Obsession with Chile Enabled a Murderous Dictatorship that Still Haunts the Country.
- Authors
HEINE, JORGE
- Abstract
This article discusses the role of Henry Kissinger, former national security adviser and secretary of state, in the military coup that overthrew the democratically elected Chilean President Salvador Allende in 1973. Kissinger's policies and actions helped install and support the brutal military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet, which lasted for 17 years. Kissinger also supported Operation Condor, an international effort that coordinated intelligence and operations among right-wing military regimes in South America, leading to the detention, torture, and murder of left-wing opposition activists. The article highlights the lasting impact of Kissinger's actions on Chile and the ongoing efforts to address the legacy of the dictatorship.
