- Title
Live donor liver transplantation: ensuring donor safety.
- Authors
Clayton, Michelle; Sey, Claire
- Abstract
The first NHS adult-to-adult live liver donation and subsequent transplant took place in June 2007. This treatment modality has been pursued due to falling numbers of organ donors. Live donor safety is of utmost importance, as up to 60% of liver tissue will be removed. This article discusses the creation of a protocol by the Leeds Liver Unit to manage the donor assessment phase which is influenced by recent legislation. Live liver donation is an encroachment on the integrity of a healthy organ; therefore, the identification of physical and psychological risk factors is paramount to ensure donor wellbeing and safety.
