The article discusses the concept of Luttinger liquids as the basis in understanding the atomic structure of matter. This liquid is believed to predict the behavior of most three-dimensional metals. A small residual interaction between the chains present in a real material can be detected because of the quantum-critical nature of the Luttinger-liquid phase.
