The article focuses on the conflict between shifting expectations of Victorian sonnets social propriety and increasingly liberal expressions of human desire. Topics include poetic expression of intimate and even forbidden desire unfolds with relative impunity; mentions "Sonnets from the Portuguese" serves as an example of love within the context of the sacred—love and heterosexual ideal; and also mentions his narrative plot unfolds within the framework of Victorian institution of marriage.
