- Title
Limited Knowledge and the Tractarian Doctrine of Reserve in Christina Rossetti's The Face of the Deep.
- Authors
ARMOND, ANDREW D.
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the poem "The Face of the Deep" by Christina Rossetti, particularly her incorporation of Tractarianism and her hesitancy into the poem. The author reads this hesitancy as a reflection on Rossetti's understanding of the Revelation of St. John the Divine in the Bible. Rossetti's use of shadows in the poem is analyzed as it seems to indicate Rossetti's trust in God and His unknowableness.
