- Abstract
The article presents a social history of seventeenth-century colonial Spanish soldiers sent to the Philippines and other Pacific areas from New Spain. Topics explored include whether soldiers served on a voluntary or involuntary basis; race; their treatment by the Spanish government including pay, clothing, and services; the loyalty of the soldiers; as well as mutinies and desertions.
