- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the economic history of impressionist art between France and the United States at the end of the 19th century. Details are given noting the popularity of the works of Claude Monet. Comments are offered analyzing the economic nature of impressionist art sales during the period, discussing ways in which its commodification and valuation switched between traditional forms of demand and estimated worth to those of speculation and market manipulation. Analysis is offered regarding the philosophical theory behind such trends as well as the events which manifested them in the U.S. art market.
