- Abstract
The article discusses the baojuan genre of narrative religious texts in Chinese literature in the 19th century. Analysis is given of the portrayal of the historical character Huang Chao, a rebel leader, described in "Baojuan of Mulian Rescuing His Mother in Three Rebirths", later known as "Baojuan of Three Rebirths," from the late Qing Dynasty. The author suggests that in popular 19th century literature, the role of Chao as an exorcist was developed with ritual function.
