- Abstract
The objective of the present research was to investigate into how consanguinity impinges on family relationship. The present study was conducted in one of the villages (Chandipur) of a cluster of twelve villages locally known as Baragaon Darbhangia'. The people of these villages belong to the Khotta Muslim community and have migrated from Darbhanga district of Bihar during the Mughal period. We studied 140 marriage cases, of which 22.14% were found to be consanguineous. In-depth interview was conducted on the couples, as well as on their respective parents to understand their opinion towards consanguinity, the present state of conjugal life of the couples and the familial relationship. The parents generally believe that consanguineous marriage provides social security for the families, helps the participating families to become close with each other, and offers a familiar environment to the couples. Most of the couples opined that marrying cousin make a psychological discomfort during the initial period, but they gradually overcome with the support received from their parents and in-laws. The study revealed that a section of the younger couples could not accept their cousins to be their life partners and such marriages ended with separation.
