- Abstract
The paper explores the performative dimension of metaphysics - along the lines of Immanuel Kant's doctrine of postulates. Against Kant's own assumption that metaphysical thought has an apriori layout, the so-called doctrine of postulates can be deciphered, based on an analysis of the pragmatic dimension of language, as a reflection on historical experience: The postulate of freedom will be reread as the experience of conscience, the postulate of God's existence and of the immortality of the soul will be deciphered as experiences of suffering and renunciation. Based on such reconstructions it will be clear that experience is genealogically as well as epistemologically the source of any special metaphysics.
