- Abstract
The paper aims to study the evolution of the representation of nature in travel literature between the 18th and 19th centuries. It seems that the representation of nature constitutes a novelty in the 18th century. The first group of texts, that of the naturalists, can inform us about a new interpretation of the notion of nature as well as about the possible ways of writing nature in the 18th century. For this reason, we will first study some excerpts from Voyages dans les Alpes by Horace Bénédict de Saussure. He is exalted in front of intact nature, a true scientific object. The second part of the presentation will be devoted to the presentation of the various aspects of nature in the accounts of the trips made in Hungary during the years 1830-1840. In general, for travellers, unspoiled (or messy) nature depreciates while the cultural landscape (tamed nature) is enhanced.
