- Abstract
The paper applies a sociolinguistic approach to the analysis of the Serbian academic community attitudes towards the pedagogical aspects of teaching English, i.e. to the advantages of native English speaking teachers over the non-native ones. The results are considered relevant for making decisions on the necessity of gradual and systematic work on changing prejudices of local teachers in terms of their role and importance for pedagogy and the teaching process. The research included members of the Serbian academic community, students from different faculties and professors of English at universities of the Republic of Serbia. The measuring instruments applied in the research are two questionnaires. The data obtained on the basis of questionnaires were subjected to descriptive statistics, along with χ2 (chi-square) test and t-test for independent samples. The results show that respondents prefer native English speaking teachers to local, non-native ones, because they consider them to be more familiar with the language as a whole. The advantage of non-native English speaking teachers is reflected in better understanding of the difficulties that arise in the process of mastering the language. Respondents support the concept of superior language competence of native English speaking teachers. The conclusion includes some of the possible implications for educational practice related to the issue of raising self-confidence of local, non-native English speaking teachers regarding their English language competence with the ultimate goal of creating locally adjusted pedagogies.
