- Abstract
Marriage in India is still largely controlled by the traditional values. It is more so among the Lingāyats. The author interviewed 113 heads of the Lingāyat households in a suburb of Dharwar City. In mate selection rules of subcaste endogamy and hypergamy are being observed. Preferential kin marriage is a characteristic feature. Choice of mates is the responsibility of parents and the kin group. The age at first marriage of girls in the large majority of cases is below the minimum age fixed by the Hindu Marriage Act. The data suggest that the traditional mode of mate selection tends to influence the age at marriage, and the rules of subcaste endogamy go a long way in determining the geographical propinquity of marital relationships.
