- Abstract
The paper ainis at identifying the function of smell in the early prose of Theodor Shtorm. The study deals with both semantic and linguistic components of the category. The paper builds on material taken from dictionaries published during last 20 years what allows to understand the meaning of the main lexemes and their specific use in language. The category of smell is expressed by several lexemes in Shtorm's works the main being Duft. Referring to smell Shtorm reveals social and cultural differences of the protagonists, foresees their fate. Verb riechen is never used to denote active aroma smelling of the protagonists, it refers to public and personai inaction passivity in character and actions of the characters. The writer gradually passes from abstract and symbolical understanding of a smell of rose to reflection of the concrete smell being an important component of vital space of protagonists. The use of set phrases, is not characteristic for early prose of the Storm, shows process of approach of speech of protagonists to a spoken language, opening for the author new opportunities in the characteristic of characters. At purposeful research of separate aspects of the literary work it is possible to reveal tendencies in creativity of the writer, to defme the direction of its author's development. In this case it is possible to follow the changes of a picture of the world of the writer in the direction of more authentic image of reality, to a realistic picture of the world. The stupefying smell which is present at wood area, erases borders between reality and dream that mattered in a romantic picture of the world. The sense of peace, peace of mind and feeling of happiness in the closed space the houses accompanied, first of all, by a smell of roses, connect in a whole in a picture of the world of a bidermayer. Space expansion, accented concentration of attention on social and class contradictions in a combination with the most various smells, capable to create multidimensional idea of the art world of works, speaks about a realistic picture of the world. "Duft" and "duften" lexemes, being the main constructs in a semantization of category of a smell, report additional values to the art world of works, allowing to see changes in a picture of the world of the writer.
