- Abstract
Peter Kropotkin was the most important representative of Russian Darwinism and the mutual aid theory, which emphasized the importance of intraspecific cooperation in the process of natural selection and struggle for existence. Based on this theory, Kropotkin proposed the thesis about the evolutionary sources of the human morality. This is why, apart from presenting this thesis, the article focuses also on the theory of mutual aid. Kropotkin’s evolutionary approach proposed the vision of human morality as a part of human nature, based on social instinct (and its manifestations, such as equality, solidarity, sense of justice, etc.) and mutual aid. For this reason, this theory was in opposition to the turn of 19th century trends in thinking about human morality, especially to the moral dualism of social Darwinism. Furthermore, Kropotkin’s approach went beyond anthropocentrism, suggesting that moral feelings are limited not only to human kind.
