- Abstract
The term Orientalism commonly defines imitation of the East (Orient) cultures by Western cultures. It can be found in various kinds of art, including fine arts, filmography and music. The last-mentioned represents the main topic of this paper. It aims to provide an analysis of Orientalism aspects that can be found in the music video Mimořádná linka [Non-scheduled Flight] by Hana Zagorová (1946), made in the nineteen eighties in Czechoslovakia. The music and many stylistic components are adopted from the song Japanese Boy by Scottish singer Aneka (1947). It is then completed with Czech lyrics and original visual effects. At first, the music video, as well as the music itself, can evoke Japanese culture. However, its depiction is highly oversimplified and bears little resemblance to real Japan. This essay firstly defines Orientalism and presents one of its known forms – Japonisme. Subsequently, its author searches for Orientalism elements of the artwork. She also divides them into several corresponding folders: clothing, scenery and decorations, postures and dance moves, and analyses them individually. The paper aims to give the reader an idea of the term Orientalism and provide its detailed and analysed example.
