- Abstract
This paper analyzes the relationship between rural credit and the level of activity of Brazilian agriculture in the period from 2002 to 2014. The hypothesis of the work is that the modernization and growth of the agricultural sector have made it an industry whose availability of credit is more determined by the demand than supply factors. To test this hypothesis, we used information divided by federation unit and Granger's causality methodology for panel data. The results of the estimates suggest, with some exceptions, a oneway causality in Granger's direction, from economic growth to the financial sector, but not the other way round. These results suggest that the supply of rural credit accommodates the demand of the sector, since it has become a low risk demander in the banks' view.
