- Title
Canada's Abortion Law Stalled.
- Abstract
The article presents information about Canada's abortion law. On May 29, Canada's House of Commons voted 140-131 in favor of a bill making abortion a crime unless a pregnancy threatens a woman's life or her "physical, mental or psychological health." Criminal abortion legislation has been nonexistent since 1988, when the Canadian Supreme Court struck down an earlier law requiring a woman who wanted an abortion to obtain the approval of a three-person hospital committee. The bill now awaits the approval of the Senate. The legislation has been criticized not only by abortion foes (who object to any legalization of abortion) but also by abortion providers and the Canadian Medical Association, both because it does not define physical, mental or psychological health and because it reinstates criminal sanctions for non-health-related abortions.
