- Title
U.S.-EU TRADING RELATIONSHIPS: THE STAKES ARE MOUNTING.
- Authors
Grimley, John; Brown, Anthony
- Abstract
The article refers to the possibility of a European-United States trade war and focuses on the regulatory power of the European Union (EU). The Treaty of Nice shifted power from EU member states to the central administration in Brussels via the Qualified Majority Voting directive. American companies could be subjected to EU trade sanctions or legislation in individual EU countries that can put U.S. businesses at a disadvantage. The opposition of EU to a merger of General Electric Co. and Honeywell International and the U.S. tariff on steel imports are mentioned. The acceptance of the European Unions' Social Chapter of the Maastricht Treaty by British Prime Minister Tony Blair is also mentioned.
