- Abstract
The article focuses on the book "Foreign Direct Investment in a Changing Global Political Economy," edited by Steve Chan. The papers usefully discuss recent trends affecting multinational activity, such as globalization and regionalisation, intensifying economic competition, especially from the Pacific Rim countries, the decline in official development aid, and far-reaching reforms in previously socialist economies. They highlight the inexorable rise in the volume of direct investment since the mid-1980s, much world trade nowadays comprising the movement by multinationals of tangibles and intangibles from units in one country to those elsewhere. The book confirms the findings of many other studies that a lot of these poorer countries are not doing particularly well out of foreign investment.
