- Title
Gas Flaring To End.
- Abstract
The article reports that Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua has vowed to support the ban on routine gas flaring that had been scheduled by 2008 for former president Olusegun Obasanjo. Department of Petroleum Resources director Tony Chukwueke has warned that companies continuing to flare beyond the deadline would face stiff penalties. The country is the second biggest source of gas flaring in the world, next to Russia. To ensure that Nigeria's gas reserves are commercially exploited, they should therefore benefit both the Nigerian economy and the fight against climate change.
