- Abstract
Background : Dental caries is described as the localized destruction of susceptible dental hard tissues caused by acidic byproducts of microbial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates. Aim :- The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the efficacy of Silver Diamine Fluoride and the combination of Silver Diamine Fluoride with Potassium Iodide on the Candida albicans and Lactobacillus count and pH of saliva in children with carious deciduous molars. Method: The study involved 60 children from the age group of 3 to 9 years were randomly divided into 2 groups, Group I- Silver Diamine Fluoride and Group II- Silver Diamine Fluoride and Potassium Iodide. Each group was further divided into subgroups of Candida albican and Lactobacilli Group. The Saliva samples were collected from each candidate before and after the application of the material to check the microbial count as well as the pH of the saliva as a baseline value. The post application saliva collection as well as pH check was done at the interval of Immediate after the application, 1 week, 1month and 3 months. The results obtained were analysed using ANOVA, and student t test.Result: The pH of the saliva was increased after the application of both the materials and was effective till 3 months. Both the materials were effective in decreasing the microbial count. Conclusion: The result of the study confirms that both Silver Diamine Fluoride and Silver Diamine Fluoride and Potassium iodide have antimicrobial effect on both Candida albican and lactobacilli species.
