- Authors
Rodrigues, Debora F.
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in shaping the future workforce. It emphasizes that DEIA encompasses a wide range of identities, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. The roots of DEIA can be traced back to affirmative action and equal employment laws in the mid-1960s, which aimed to address discriminatory practices. The article highlights the positive correlation between diversity and innovation but also acknowledges the challenges faced due to recent rollbacks in DEIA efforts. However, the author finds hope in the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) community, which is dedicated to embracing diversity and taking meaningful action. The article concludes with a hopeful outlook for a more equitable and inclusive future.
