A Note on the Implications of Two Mari Texts (ARM 26/1 106 and ARM 25 143) for Benaiah's Leonine Episode in 2Sam 23:20 par. 1Chr 11:22.

- Abstract
Both 2Sam 23:20 and 1Chr 11:22 recount Benaiah's slaughter of a lion, a detail that is out of place in a list of martial feats but at home in the ancient near eastern world. In this note, I argue that two Mari texts (ARM 26/1 106 and ARM 25 143) offer evidence that accomplishments just like Benaiah's deed could be recorded and preserved in palace archives. Consequently, I suggest that Benaiah's deed was memorialized in a similar manner and subsequently appropriated in the source list for 2Sam 23:20 par. 1Chr 11:22.
