Pinning Pyrotechnics and Phrenology: Using Pinterest to Teach Nineteenth-Century American Novels.

- Abstract
The rich contextual knowledge that many nineteenth-century novelists assumed on the part of their contemporary readers is absent in the twenty-first century. Consequently, many current readers miss the subtle cues that references to fashion, social customs, settings, music, entertainments, food, etc. are intended to provide. This textual richness functions, at times, as a code that foreshadows plot developments and enriches symbols, characterization, and themes. While we cannot immerse our students in nineteenth-century culture in a fifteen-week course, we can create entertaining supplemental assignments using social media technology to address this weakness. This paper examines the possibilities of creating a companion assignment with Pinterest for teaching Ishmael, one of the great novels by the reemerging nineteenth-century novelist, E. D. E. N. Southworth, who is perhaps best known for her pre-Civil War novel, The Hidden Hand.
