- Abstract
There is rapidly accumulating evidence on the benefits of physical activity in cancer prevention worldwide. Most epidemiologic studies are on common cancer types including breast, colon, endometrium, ovary and prostate. They include different domains of activities such as recreational, occupational, household and total life-time physical activities. A scoping review was undertaken using the database of MEDLINE. Publications from years of 2007 to 2017 were included in the search. Studies on the association of all types of physical activity with cancer risk were selected. 13 cohort studies and 10 case-control studies were reviewed. There was only one study found for each of the following cancer types: colon, upper gastrointestinal (GI), pancreas and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. All but two studies (1 cohort, 1 case-control) identified an inverse association between physical activity and cancer risk. The intensity and types of physical activities required to reduce cancer risk and the life period when physical activity may have more influence vary among studies. There is strong evidence on the inverse association of physical activity and cancer risk, especially for breast cancer, and to a lesser extent, cancers of the colon and endometrium. Inconsistent results are found in prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. There is limited evidence on the protective effect of physical activity on cancers of upper GI, pancreas and plasma cell neoplasm. The intensity, type of physical activity as well as life period that might contribute to the reduction of cancer risk needs to be further researched.
