- Abstract
Because Rwandans obtain their food mostly from vegetable sources that contain no vitamin B12, quite a few people in Rwanda may be at risk of anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Therefore, this study aimed to assess vitamin B12 intake and identify its background factors using weighed food records (WFR) in rural Rwanda and ways to increase its intake. WFR were collected from 32 households. The number of survey days varied according to participants' availability. Two-/three-day WFRs were collected from 28 males and 50 females in 11 households for calculating daily intake and data of 510 meals from the 107 participants (=10 years old) analyzed to assess the association between food sources and intake. The intake in all participants was below the estimated average requirement. The probability of deficiency was ≥50%, and 24/58 participants' intake was 0 µg/day. No gender differences existed in vitamin B12 intake and consumption frequency. For both genders, the highest vitamin B12 contributor was soup with mukene, followed by porridge with milk, soup with beef, and agatogo with mukene. All villagers had deficiency risk with no significant difference in dietary intake between genders. Due to their plant-based dietary pratices, >40% participants did not consume vitamin B12 during the survey days. Mukene has high vitamin B12 content, and milk is relatively cheap among animal-source foods (ASF) and easy to consume in large portions uncooked; hence, increasing mukene and milk consumption is recommended to meet the recommended nutrient intake.
