- Abstract
This contribution examines the use of physical space in legal discourse within strategies for the repression of heretical deviation. Focused mainly on title 5 (de haereticis) of book xvi of Codex Theodosianus, specific attention is paid to the period of the Theodosian dynasty. Forbidden topography, locations heretics were banned from and, in particular, loca imposed upon heretics as compulsory places of residence are analysed based on the cases of Eunomius, Jovinian, Nestorius, two bishops and one monk. Particular consideration is given to the competition for urban space amongst rival theologies, the imperial determination to draw physical boundaries between orthodoxy and heterodoxy, the reasons behind the choice of specific loca imposed upon heretics from the Danube to the Great Oasis, passing through the isle of Bua, the procedures for the exclusion of heretics and the role played in these procedures by imperial functionaries, the collaboration between civil and ecclesiastical authorities, the discourse of the displaced and the opportunities heretics may have had to communicate from their isolation as well as the effect and influence exerted by the presence of heretics in designated locations.
