- Abstract
The article presents biographical information on various surgeons employed by the U.S. Navy during the the U.S. Civil War. Assistant Surgeon Newton H. Adams served at the Naval Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr. Gustavus S. Franklin became a Passed Assistant Surgeon in 1865. Phineas Jonathan Horwitz served as Chief of the Navy Bureau of Medicine from 1865 to 1869. Primary emphasis is given to discussing the career of Horwitz. He also served as an Assistant Surgeon during the U.S.-Mexican War at a naval hospital in Tabasco, Mexico.
