- Abstract
The article highlights the Benedictine Mission to teach the gospel to the freed African Americans of Skidaway Island from 1877 to 1889. Topics discussed are role of the Catholic missionaries in addressing the religious and educational needs of African Americans, evangelization efforts of Reverend William Gross, the charter titled Benedictine Order of Georgia which aims to educate the youth, and struggle of black residents of Skidaway Island to maintain economic independence.
