A literary criticism of the novella "Kotlovan" (The Foundation Pit) by Soviet author Andrei Platonov is presented. It analyzes the novella as a meditation on the attempt to form a new base, or ground, for language, culture and society after the Russian Revolution. It discusses the depiction of in-between existence in the novel, the historical context of Soviet construction projects, and dispossessed and lost people.
