- Abstract
The letter discusses the need for standardization of the composite outcome major adverse kidney events (MAKE) in critical care nephrology research. The authors highlight the variability in defining persistent kidney dysfunction and the limitations of using creatinine or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) as biomarkers. They conducted a secondary analysis of a biobank and found significant discrepancies between eGFR calculated using creatinine or cystatin C, with cystatin C overestimating kidney function. The authors suggest that incorporating cystatin C into MAKE assessments may improve accuracy. Further research is needed to develop standardized methods for assessing MAKE.
